《全國報刊索引》創立于1955年，是上海圖書館（上海科學技術情報研究所）主管主辦幷傾力打造的知名信息服務品牌。
上海圖書館的中文報刊文獻館藏在海內外具有舉足輕重的地位。1955年，在國家文化部的委托下，上海圖書館創辦了《全國報刊索引》雜志，旨在彙聚和揭示全國出版發行的所有報刊文獻資源內容，它也成爲國內最早出版發行的綜合性中文報刊文獻檢索工具。
六十餘年來，《全國報刊索引》已由最初的月刊，發展成爲集印刷版與網絡服務平臺爲一體的綜合性知識服務體系，現可提供5萬餘種報刊、5000余萬篇文獻的一站式服務，年更新數據量超過500萬條，相繼挖掘出版了《晚清期刊全文數據庫》（1833～1911）、《中文期刊全文數據庫》（1911～1949）、《字林洋行中英文報全文紙數據庫》（1850～1951）等珍稀數字資源。
Founded in 1955, Quan Guo Bao Kan Suo Yin (CNBKSY) is an important information service brand sponsored and fostered with relentless efforts by Shanghai Library. Over the past six decades, CNBKSY has been developed from the original journal into a comprehensive knowledge service system that integrates an online service platform with printed versions.
Shanghai Library has a pivotal position in collections of Chinese newspapers and periodicals at home and abroad. In 1955, Shanghai Library was entrusted by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China to found CNBKSY, which is aimed at gathering and revealing all newspapers and periodicals published nationwide. It has become the earliest comprehensive search tool of Chinese newspapers and periodicals ever launched in China.
CNBKSY now provides the one-stop services of more than 50,000 titles of newspapers and periodicals and over 50 million pieces of literature, with an annual update of more than 5 million entries. Such rare digital resources as the Late Qing Dynasty Periodical Full-text Database (1833～1911), Chinese Periodical Full-text Database (1911～1949) and The North-China Daily News & Herald Newspapers and Hong Lists (1850～1951) have been launched one after another.
