Description

The “National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan” is a special project of NCL designated by the Ministry of Education (MOE). In the past, progress on sorting through relevant materials on theses and dissertations in Taiwan, NCL published the “Bibliographies of Theses and Dissertation of the Republic of China” in 1970, and starting from 1994, NCL has been designated by the Department of Higher Education, MOE, to conduct the “Archive Project of Abstracts of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan.” In September 1997, the Web of the Document On-line Retrieval System was established and won wide acclaim from wide-ranging fields. In September 1998, with the financial support of the MOE, NCL developed the “Retrieval System of Theses and Dissertations Abstracts in Taiwan”, and in December of the same year, the system’s opening ceremony was held, marking a milestone of the on-line information services of theses and dissertations in Taiwan. In February 2000, the functions of uploading completed electronic theses and dissertations and on-line printing of the authorized complete electronic theses and dissertations were added to the system. This further integrated the co-building and sharing services of on-line databases of the existing “Information Network of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan.”

To further increase the service efficiency of the Library, a second-generation system of the “Information Network of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan” was established in 2004. In view of the fact that the authorization percentage of theses and dissertations which can be accessed free of charge has been decreasing through the years, NCL conducted a review of the cumulative results and experiences and developed a new service platform of electronic theses and dissertations to convert the old system to the new one which could enhance the Library’s knowledge services with the value-added research support system. The new system officially began its operations in December of 2009. Moreover, in order to ensure that the collected materials would consist primarily of the theses and dissertations of colleges and universities in Taiwan to match the database, the third generation of the system of theses and dissertations was renamed as the “National Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan (NDLTD-Taiwan).”
